A New Voice

Posted on July 20, 2011

This blog is intended to provide a voice for residents of the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen Area H. There are many diverse communities in this area. The main ones are: Eastgate, Allison Lake, Coalmont, Missezula Lake, Manning Park, Princeton Fringe, Princeton-Summerland Corridor (Five Mile Valley and Chain Lakes Area),  Osprey Lake, and Tulameen. For political and administrative reasons, Area H sometimes gets lumped in with the Okanagan, but it is a different geography, a different history,  and generally has different interests at heart.

Currently there is a controversy between Area H residents and Princeton Municipality because of an attempt to get residents to help pay for a new aquatic centre. This aquatic centre is to be located in Princeton where the residents there will have easy access to it. People in Area H will have to drive a long way to get there, and it sounds like many of them are simply not interested – particularly at the very high price that they will almost all have to pay. The fact that a large proportion of residents in Princeton are renting, and won’t have to pay, is a particular bone of contention.

There is a planned referendum on September 24 where residents of Princeton, as well those of Area H will be able to vote yes or no. All these issues surrounding the Princeton Aquatic Centre proposal will be the “kickoff” subject of this blog. Only the future will tell where we go from there.
